NOAA operates two geostationary satellites
POLAR ORBITING SATELLITES
known as GOES East and GOES West. The GOES
East satellite (currently GOES-8), is located over 75°
west longitude while GOES West (currently GOES-9)
is located over 135° west longitude. Figure 1-6 shows
the area of the earth covered by GOES East and GOES
West.
Polar orbiting satellites closely parallel the earths
longitude lines. They pass over the vicinity of the
North and South Poles with each revolution. As the
earth rotates to the east beneath the satellite, each pass
monitors an area to the west of the previous pass. Since
